We at Patients Together still endeavour to force change in the torturous condition the people of Ireland are suffer in our A&E departments .We welcome the news of the possibility of 100 extra beds at Dublin’s Mater Hospital, anything to change the ever worsening conditions. Our hospitals at present are forced to close there A&E departments on a regular basis due to overcrowding as they pack to capacity and staff already stretched to breaking point are pushed further.
Our ambulance workers rush our sick, with wailing sirens through our streets only to wait outside A&E departments unable to pass over care of the sick to those now responsible. In our meeting with Minister Harney in November 04 we presented the case on behalf of the people of Ireland all the while stressing the urgency. We are disappointed that we find ourselves in Jan 05 that the situation is worse not better.
Last week one 84 year old lady sat on a chair from 11.30am to 2.30am the following day. She was in a row of 8 chairs. Her family also cared for a very confused patient beside their mam who was continuously trying to remove a breathing apparatus and leave the hospital. Their mam sat in the path of a door way on one of the stormiest nights of the year sick and weak, her frail hands and body were frozen. We hear continuously this is how the sick in our country are treated. Mrs Mulreaney had a severe kidney infection, she left the hospital at 2.30 am others not so fortunate slept in the cold draught in the chairs for nights. Mrs Mulreaney has also recently spent five days on a trolley. These experiences have left herself, her family and like many others with a terror of our A&E departments.
The Mulreaneys will be happy to speak to anyone regarding their mother’s experiences.
